Prince Harry is accusing senior British security officials of failing to warn him about an Al-Qaeda threat to assassinate him, despite authorities allegedly knowing about the danger as far back as 2023.

According to a report in The Sunday Times, Harry’s legal team contacted British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood this month, asking her to personally intervene in a new review of security arrangements for the Duke of Sussex and his family.

Harry’s lawyers claim the chairman of RAVEC — the government committee responsible for determining security arrangements for members of the Royal Family and other public figures — knew about intelligence concerning the Al-Qaeda threat in 2023 but failed to pass the information to Harry or his security team.

The report says American authorities were also not directly notified by Britain, despite Harry living in the United States at the time.

Instead, the FBI eventually alerted Harry’s security personnel later that year about intelligence involving an Al-Qaeda document that reportedly raised the possibility of assassinating the prince.

The threat has been linked in part to Harry’s military service in Afghanistan. Harry served two tours there with the British military and has repeatedly argued that his military background makes both him and his family potential targets for terrorists and extremists.

The revelation comes amid Harry’s long-running battle with the British government over his security arrangements. Since stepping back from official royal duties in 2020, he has no longer automatically received the same level of taxpayer-funded police protection he previously had while visiting Britain.

An ITV report in July said a security assessment prepared for Harry identified six potential terror scenarios targeting him, five of them originating in Britain. The Al-Qaeda threat was among those identified.

Harry now argues that the alleged failure to inform him about the threat when it first became known has further undermined his confidence in the system responsible for determining the security protection afforded to him and his family.
