Bunker of Light, run by Yosef and Sarah Shidler of Toms River, is organizing a Rosh Hashanah gathering at a frum camp in High View, West Virginia, for people who need a comfortable place to spend Yom Tov.

The gathering is geared toward late teens, young adults in their twenties, older singles, single mothers, and others who feel they do not have a community or a place to go for Yom Tov.

The Shidlers have been hosting Shabbos meals and gatherings in their home, working with teens and young adults and building a community around those who join them. After being offered the use of a camp for Rosh Hashanah, they are working to bring that same atmosphere to a larger setting.

The retreat will take place September 10–14, 2026, with arrival Thursday or Friday and departure Sunday night or Monday. The location is approximately two hours from Baltimore and five hours from Crown Heights, depending on traffic.

The program will include Nusach Arizal davening, Yom Tov meals, and time to spend together and enjoy the surrounding grounds.

Organizers stress that this is a grassroots gathering being arranged on a very limited budget. Guests should expect simple camp accommodations in cabins and bunk rooms and must bring their own bedding, pillows, and towels. Clear expectations are important: this is a communal Yom Tov at a camp, with no resort amenities or luxury service being promised.

The gathering will have a “kibbutz-style” approach, with participants encouraged to contribute where they can, including setting tables, helping with cleanup, and welcoming other guests. A person is in place to run the food and oversee the meals, while volunteers and additional practical help are still needed.

Limited spots remain. Registration is $250 per person, which covers only part of the overall expense. Bunker of Light is seeking donations and sponsorships to help cover food, staffing, supplies, and other costs, as well as assistance for those who cannot afford to attend.

Family rates are available. Anyone interested in joining who finds the cost difficult is encouraged to contact the organizers privately to discuss possible arrangements.

The Shidlers hope that, with community support, this gathering can lead to similar events in the future, giving people who feel alone or disconnected somewhere to spend Yom Tov and a community to share it with.
