Two people were shot in separate incidents Monday afternoon in Crown Heights, as thousands gathered nearby for the annual New York Carnival Parade along Eastern Parkway.

According to police, a man was shot near Nostrand Avenue and St. John’s Place, just north of Eastern Parkway. A suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered.

A second shooting was reported shortly afterward at Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, along the heavily secured parade area.

Police said two suspects fled toward Albany Avenue. One was described as wearing a gray hoodie and blue jeans, while the second was wearing a white shirt.

Both victims are expected to survive. No police officers were injured.

The shootings came as the NYPD deployed an unusually large security operation for the annual Caribbean celebration, following violence at and around the parade in previous years. Thousands of officers were stationed throughout the parade route and surrounding Crown Heights streets, with additional security screening and barricades in place.

This year’s parade was also scheduled to conclude earlier, at 5:30 p.m., in an effort to prevent the violence that has historically occurred toward the end of the festivities.

The incidents are under investigation.
