US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that Iran will face continued consequences for attacks on American naval vessels, while the United States will maintain its campaign of economic pressure against Tehran.

Speaking to reporters in Ecuador, Rubio described the US response to Iranian attacks, saying, "They continue to fire on naval ships, and when they fire at our naval ships, they pay a price in tankers. They don’t hit our ships, but they lose five tankers."

Referring to the most recent strikes on Tuesday night, Rubio added, "They lost five more last night. Four were damaged, and one was sunk. They'll continue to pay a price for that. In the meantime, we're going to continue to strangle them economically."

President Donald Trump also discussed the conflict with Iran during remarks to reporters Wednesday, predicting that the war will come to an end shortly after the US midterm elections in November.

"I think the war will end immediately after the election," Trump said, arguing that Iran "can't hold out any longer."

Trump accused Tehran of seeking to prolong the conflict in an effort to affect the elections. "They're desperate to try and affect the election so that we could get a nice, weak group of people in there and leave them alone and let them have their nuclear weapon."

The President also commented on the US strikes carried out Tuesday night, warning, "You're going to see a lot more."
