Tens of thousands of Hasidim from around the world are flocking to Ukraine ahead of Rosh Hashanah to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in the city of Uman.

According to data from the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS), more than 31,000 Hasidim have entered the country in organized groups since the end of August, with the heaviest traffic recorded in recent days.

Ukrainian Border Guard spokesman Andriy Demchenko said that the greatest congestion at border crossings was recorded over the past two to three days.

“On Wednesday alone, approximately 13,700 Hasidim entered the country, while another 11,600 entered during the two preceding days," Demchenko said.

The spokesman also noted that the pilgrims’ travel routes have shifted in recent days, with most traffic now concentrated at Ukraine’s land border crossings with Poland and Romania, alongside the crossings with Moldova.

Footage circulated on social media in recent days showed long lines at border crossings between Poland and Ukraine. The Ukrainian Border Guard clarified that these are temporary periods of congestion caused by the arrival of buses carrying organized groups, and that the lines are processed and cleared quickly.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the pilgrims are entering the country as planned and without unusual incidents, with the exception of a small number of cases in which 13 foreign nationals who did not meet the legal requirements were denied entry.

Ukrainian authorities estimate that approximately 40,000 people will arrive in Uman for the holiday this year.
