Newly released FBI records show that a federal agent sought to open a criminal investigation into Elon Musk over DOGE’s requirement that federal employees list five accomplishments from the previous week.

According to Fox News, former FBI Special Agent Kevin Gounaud argued in a February 2025 email that Musk and officials at the Office of Personnel Management should be investigated, alleging the initiative wasted government time, created security concerns and potentially benefited Musk financially through his ownership of X.

“Happy to write the case opening and find a prosecutor (or at least try),” Gounaud wrote, adding: “And no, I’m not kidding.”

The Washington Examiner reported that Gounaud also compared Musk’s use of X for government-related communications to Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.

The records were released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who accused FBI personnel of political bias. Grassley also released emails showing former agent Walter Giardina repeatedly sought a role in the FBI’s Trump-Russia investigation.

The documents show Gounaud proposed an investigation, but do not establish that the FBI actually opened a criminal case against Musk.
