IRANIAN DELEGATION ARRIVES: Tehran’s Foreign Minister Lands In New York Amid War With U.S.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Monday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly as Iran and the United States remain locked in a seven-month military conflict.
Iranian officials said Araghchi plans to participate in formal UN events and hold an extensive series of meetings with foreign ministers and senior officials attending the gathering.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to attend the General Assembly and address the full body.
The Trump administration approved visas only for Iran’s core delegation under U.S. obligations as the host country of the United Nations. The Iranian delegation is significantly smaller than in previous years and faces strict travel and financial restrictions.
Delegation members are reportedly limited to traveling between the airport, designated hotels and UN headquarters. They are also prohibited from purchasing luxury goods, while certain other purchases require approval from the State Department.
Tehran has accused Washington of obstructing its diplomatic efforts by denying visas to Iranian media crews, including members of Pezeshkian’s presidential press team.
President Trump said over the weekend that he would “probably be open” to meeting Pezeshkian. However, no formal meeting has been scheduled, and direct negotiations during the General Assembly currently appear unlikely.
Trump also met with French President Emmanuel Macron in New York, with the two leaders agreeing to coordinate efforts to protect critical energy infrastructure in the Middle East and preserve freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, the United States is continuing its military and economic pressure campaign against Tehran. U.S. Central Command said American forces had intercepted and diverted 110 commercial vessels as of September 21 while enforcing a maritime blockade on Iranian ports.
The USS Rafael Peralta, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, is among the American warships enforcing the blockade and intercepting maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports and coastal facilities.
Tensions are also escalating in the Red Sea as the Houthis continue advancing along Yemen’s coastline. European officials are calling for additional warships and aircraft to reinforce the naval mission protecting commercial shipping in the region.
The Houthis have seized several strategic coastal locations, expanding their ability to threaten vessels traveling through the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the critical shipping route connecting the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal.
The arrival of senior Iranian officials in New York has turned the General Assembly into a major diplomatic arena even as American and Iranian forces remain engaged in active hostilities.
