A man shouting “Heil Hitler” and other expletives allegedly pulled a knife and chased a Bochur into a Crown Heights home early Wednesday morning before slashing bicycle tires and fleeing.
The frightening incident began at approximately 2:30 a.m. near Sterling Place and Brooklyn Avenue, when the man began following a Bochur, threatening him and throwing garbage cans in his direction.
The situation quickly escalated when the man allegedly pulled out a knife and began running after the Bochur, pursuing him into a nearby home. The Bochur managed to get safely inside and was not injured.
Remaining outside the home, the suspect continued taunting the victim, making comments including, “Now I know where you live,” and shouting “Heil [expletive] Hitler.”
He then allegedly slashed the tires of bicycles parked on the property before fleeing the area.
Crown Heights Shmira and the NYPD were immediately called, and responders soon located the suspect nearby. He took off again, jumping over fences on private properties and managing to evade responders temporarily.
Multiple Shmira volunteers continued canvassing the surrounding streets and yards, and a short time later the suspect was located again. He was taken into custody by officers from the NYPD’s 77th Precinct.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Division is investigating the incident.
Residents are urged to remain aware of their surroundings. In an emergency, call 911 and Crown Heights Shmira 24/7 at 718-221-0303.
Shmira is also seeking responsible and qualified individuals interested in volunteering and giving back to the community.
