WHITE HOUSE SHOWDOWN: Politico Reporter’s Press Badge Confiscated Hours After Judge Ordered Access Restored
A Politico reporter was denied entry to the White House and had his press credential confiscated by the Secret Service Thursday morning, despite a federal judge issuing an order just hours earlier requiring the Trump administration to restore access to Politico, CNN and MS NOW.
Politico reported that its reporter attempted to enter the White House grounds Thursday morning but was stopped by the Secret Service.
“The POLITICO reporter had his pass confiscated by the Secret Service Thursday morning and was denied entry to White House grounds,” Politico reported.
According to Politico, a Secret Service agent told the reporter that he was not cleared to enter, although he might be permitted access using a temporary day pass rather than the permanent “hard pass” normally used by White House correspondents.
MS NOW reporter Laura Barrón-López also reported that her press pass was taken when she attempted to enter the White House Thursday morning, Mediaite reported.
The developments came only hours after U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a 14-day temporary restraining order blocking President Donald Trump’s ban on the three news organizations and directing that their White House access be restored.
Kelly, who was nominated to the federal bench by Trump in 2017, wrote that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were “likely to succeed” in showing that the administration failed to provide them with adequate due process.
“The record lacks factual support for Defendants’ contention that the revocation of Plaintiffs’ hard passes will in fact protect national security or that national security will be endangered if the Court orders their passes reinstated while this litigation proceeds,” Kelly wrote.
The three outlets had sued after Trump barred them from the White House, arguing that the administration retaliated against them because of their reporting. The administration has defended the restrictions in part on national-security grounds.
It was not immediately clear Thursday morning whether the reporters’ continued denial of entry reflected a delay in implementing the court order or a decision to challenge its application.
