Senator Weber Steps Up Pedestrian Safety Efforts with Districtwide ‘Street Smart’ Initiative
With pedestrian safety an ongoing concern for families and communities throughout Rockland County, State Senator Bill Weber is taking the issue directly to residents with a new “Street Smart” public awareness initiative aimed at preventing crashes, injuries and fatalities.
As part of the effort, Senator Weber recently distributed “Street Smart: Simple Steps That Save Lives,” a pedestrian and driver safety mailer throughout the 38th Senate District. The initiative focuses on greater awareness and personal responsibility among pedestrians, drivers and cyclists sharing increasingly busy roads.
“Pedestrian safety is something that affects every community in Rockland County,” said Senator Weber. “We have children walking to school and bus stops, seniors crossing busy roads, families pushing strollers and people walking to houses of worship. We need drivers and pedestrians alike to recognize that a few seconds of additional attention can prevent a tragedy and save a life.”
The Street Smart mailer provides residents with practical guidance on crossing streets safely, remaining visible and alert, avoiding distractions, exercising greater caution at intersections and crosswalks, and protecting children around school buses and bus stops.
Senator Weber said the initiative is part of his continuing focus on public safety and quality-of-life concerns throughout Rockland County.
“We can talk about laws, infrastructure and enforcement, and all of those have an important role, but safety also depends on the decisions each of us makes every day,” Senator Weber said. “This initiative is about reminding people to slow down, pay attention and look out for one another.”
The Senator is encouraging families to review the Street Smart guidance together and make pedestrian and driver safety part of their everyday routines.
“Every resident deserves to feel safe walking through their neighborhood and every parent deserves to know that people behind the wheel are watching out for their children,” Senator Weber said. “Safer streets start with all of us, and these simple steps can save lives.”
