OCT. 7 FALLOUT: Gaza Intelligence Chief Claims IDF Is Singling Him Out For Blame Over Massacre Failures
Newly released court documents are shedding light on an extraordinary battle between the IDF and the intelligence officer who headed the Gaza Division’s intelligence apparatus during the October 7 massacre, with Lt. Col. Aryeh Amidror arguing that he is being unfairly singled out for failures that extended throughout Israel’s military and intelligence establishment.
Amidror is fighting the IDF’s effort to terminate his permanent military service following investigations into the catastrophic intelligence failures surrounding the Hamas invasion. He argues that the action against him is discriminatory and that other commanders connected to the failures have not faced comparable consequences.
A central part of the dispute concerns intelligence gathered before the massacre and Hamas training exercises. Amidror maintains that after taking command of the Gaza Division’s intelligence apparatus, he ordered personnel to examine Hamas exercises and determine whether the terror group possessed the capability to execute its operational plans.
The IDF has strongly rejected Amidror’s portrayal of the case, citing what it says were serious professional failures in the months preceding October 7 and during the critical hours immediately before the invasion. Military officials have also cited the Gaza Division intelligence branch’s failure to provide adequate warning.
The case is providing a rare public look at the continuing battle over individual responsibility for the intelligence failures preceding October 7, three years after thousands of Hamas-led terrorists invaded southern Israel and carried out the deadliest terror attack in the country’s history.
