OCT. 7 TERROR TRIALS: Israel Eyes First Indictments In 2027 As Hundreds Await Prosecution
Israel hopes to begin filing indictments during the first half of 2027 against terrorists accused of participating in the October 7 massacre, but serious staffing and logistical problems could delay the unprecedented proceedings, officials told the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee on Wednesday, according to The Times of Israel.
Approximately 300 suspects believed to have participated in the massacre are thought to remain in Israeli custody, although authorities have not publicly disclosed an exact figure.
Committee chairman MK Simcha Rothman said the Israeli public is “waiting, demanding and entitled” to see those responsible for the atrocities prosecuted.
Officials told lawmakers that staffing shortages are affecting both the military prosecution and Israel Prison Service, while some suspects have still not been questioned by prosecutors.
A special facility intended to securely accommodate the trials is also facing delays, raising the possibility that some of the most significant criminal proceedings in Israel’s history will not begin until more than three years after the massacre.
