As the Jewish community marks three years since October 7, Chabad of Markham has dedicated a stained glass window that carries a message of memory, Jewish pride, and hope.
The window was unveiled during Simchas Torah celebrations on October 3. Its colorful images follow the Jewish year, with symbols including a shofar, matzah, and dreidel. At its center is an inscription that speaks to the heart of the dedication: “You will be remembered in our hearts throughout the year.”
Hundreds of community members helped bring the window to life by sponsoring individual holidays and images. Lead sponsors, friends and founding members of Chabad, Wilfred and Marcelle Krasin dedicated the window in honor of their family and in memory of all those who perished on October 7.
For Rabbi Avraham Plotkin, Spiritual Leader, Executive Director of Chabad Markham, the window is a lasting reminder that Jewish memory is woven into every part of the year. During the dedication, he reflected on the pain of October 7, the strength of the Jewish people, and the comfort found in coming together through our traditions and holidays.
Rabbi Plotkin, also spoke about the recent safe landing of a FlyDubai flight following an emergency, describing it as a moment that brought a powerful sense of protection and hope.
The Simchas Torah celebration was filled with families from the community. Under the leadership of our Young Chabad Markham families’ directors: Rabbi Sholom Ber and Itta Plotkin, hundreds of children took part in a special program, joined the Hakafot, and enjoyed an inspirational and fun children’s program. Their joyful presence brought a particular warmth to a day of remembrance and celebration.
The new window honors loved ones who are deeply missed, while celebrating the traditions that continue to sustain Jewish life. It will remain a visible reminder, throughout the year, of the community’s shared grief, enduring connection, and hope for brighter days.
