IRAN DENIES ECONOMIC COLLAPSE: Central Bank Governor Pushes Back as U.S. Blockade Strangles Oil Exports

Oct 14, 2026·2 min read

Iran’s central bank governor rejected American claims that the Iranian economy is collapsing, insisting that the country’s financial system remains functional despite an extensive U.S. naval blockade and growing economic pressure. The remarks were delivered during an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok.

The United States reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports in July and launched Operation Economic Outcast on August 24, targeting Tehran’s remaining financial and commercial connections to the international economy.

According to energy intelligence firm Vortexa, Iran’s seaborne crude oil exports fell to zero during the second week of September, compared with a 14-day average of approximately 230,000 barrels per day at the beginning of that month. Exports remained at zero as of October 5.

The economic pressure has also severely weakened Iran’s currency. Exchange-rate data indicate that the Iranian rial has lost nearly 35 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar since July, while annual inflation reached 73.6 percent in September.

Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati said his institution is prioritizing inflation control, financial stability, and the continued operation of banking and payment services. He also emphasized efforts to secure foreign currency for medicine and essential goods. Iran’s central bank launched a program in late September to sell up to $2 billion through state banks to support the rial.
