HAMAS EXTORTING GAZA MERCHANTS: Terror Group Demands NIS 10,000 Per Truck, Israel Says
Israel has accused Hamas of threatening merchants in Gaza and demanding approximately NIS 10,000 for each truck carrying commercial goods into the territory, warning that the terrorist organization is attempting to interfere with civilian supply deliveries.
According to information released by COGAT, merchants reported that Hamas also requires them to sell approximately 30 percent of their goods in cash, violating arrangements that require approved traders to conduct transactions through banking channels.
Israeli authorities said the threats extended beyond financial demands. The terrorist organization reportedly carried out arrests connected to the dispute, including the detention of a merchant’s son.
COGAT sent an urgent communication to international organizations warning that Hamas was threatening the continued operation of Gaza’s private commercial supply system, which accounts for approximately half of incoming truck deliveries.
Israeli officials said the United Nations, international aid organizations, and donor countries would continue to coordinate humanitarian shipments separately. COGAT also warned that Hamas could attempt to blame Israel for shortages resulting from interference with private merchants.
