UNITY PLAN: Trump Administration Pushing For Netanyahu-Eisenkot Government With Netanyahu Retiring After Two Years

Oct 15, 2026·3 min read

The Trump administration is reportedly working to encourage the formation of a broad Israeli unity government that would allow Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remain in office for up to two years before retiring from political life, as part of an American-backed effort to secure regional diplomatic agreements and reshape the Middle East, according to a report Thursday in Israel Hayom.

The proposed framework would bring together Netanyahu’s Likud party and former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar party, creating a coalition capable of making significant diplomatic and security decisions. Under the reported arrangement, Netanyahu would continue serving as prime minister for a limited period, during which the government would work to end ongoing regional conflicts and advance normalization agreements with Arab countries, particularly Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu would then retire from politics.

A senior American official said the administration’s preference for a broad Israeli government has been communicated to senior Israeli political figures, both directly and through diplomatic channels. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has also met with senior political leaders, including Eisenkot. Although American officials are reportedly taking care not to appear to interfere in Israel’s upcoming October 27 election, they have expressed support for establishing a stable government without extremist elements.

The reported initiative is closely connected to President Donald Trump’s efforts to expand the Abraham Accords. Washington has been offering Saudi Arabia additional security cooperation, including potential F-35 fighter jet sales and assistance with a civilian nuclear program, in an effort to secure normalization with Israel. However, Saudi officials have reportedly indicated that progress toward such an agreement would require changes to the composition of Israel’s government.

Eisenkot’s political bloc would reportedly impose several conditions before agreeing to join such a coalition. These include binding guarantees that Netanyahu would retire after the agreed period, the repeal of legislation associated with the government’s judicial overhaul, changes to Israel’s judicial and constitutional framework, and the establishment of a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 Hamas massacre.

The report also addressed possible involvement by President Isaac Herzog in discussions surrounding a future unity government, although the President’s Residence has denied reports that he is participating in such negotiations. Herzog has recently expressed his intention to work toward preventing another round of elections after October 27.

No formal coalition agreement has been announced, and the reported framework remains a proposal under discussion among American, Israeli and international political figures. Any agreement would depend on the election results, negotiations between the participating parties and acceptance of the conditions proposed by Eisenkot’s bloc
