MAILBAG: Campaign Promises Are Easy, But Where Is the Help When Constituents Need It?

Oct 18, 2026·2 min read

To the Editor,

As we approach Election Day, politicians are once again filling our mailboxes with campaign flyers promising outstanding service, accessibility, and dedication to their constituents.

But what happens when a resident actually needs their help?

In early 2025, I reached out to an elected official’s office seeking assistance with a stressful financial matter involving a New York State agency. I received an automated acknowledgment promising that someone would follow up.

Weeks passed without a response. I reached out again, only to receive another automated message.

To this day, more than a year and a half later, nobody from that office has personally responded to my request.

I find it incredibly disappointing that elected officials can spend so much time and money promoting their commitment to helping residents, yet when someone actually reaches out for assistance, they can be left without even a simple response.

Public service should be about more than campaign slogans, glossy mailers, and promises made before an election.

As we prepare to vote on November 3, I hope residents remember that the true measure of an elected official isn’t what they promise during campaign season, but how they treat constituents when they genuinely need help.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Green

Airmont
