People are sometimes surprised when I tell them that one of the best preparations for starting a business is working for someone else first.

After years of mentoring entrepreneurs through CHYE, I’ve seen how valuable that experience can be. I’ve worked with people who had little more than an idea and with owners running multimillion-dollar companies. A good idea matters, but knowing how a business actually operates can make an enormous difference.

When you work inside a business, you get to learn before every mistake comes out of your own pocket. You see how customers are served, how sales happen, how teams communicate, and how managers handle problems. You begin to understand the work behind the finished product.

You also discover what you enjoy—and what you don’t.

Someone may love designing products but dislike managing people. Another person may be excellent at sales but struggle with the daily details of running an operation. Employment gives you an opportunity to discover those strengths and limitations before taking on the responsibilities of ownership.

Make Your Job a Place to Learn
If you hope to own a business one day, approach your current job with curiosity.
Pay attention to how the company attracts customers. Notice which problems come up repeatedly. Ask why certain decisions are made. Learn how your work affects other parts of the business.

Become someone your employer can rely on. Solve problems, follow through on commitments, and develop skills beyond your immediate responsibilities.

Those habits help you advance as an employee. They also prepare you to lead a business of your own. A future entrepreneur who understands what it means to be a dependable employee has already learned something important about leadership.
Working first can also give you time to build savings and professional relationships. Both can make the transition to business ownership more manageable.

Business Ownership Is a Choice
There is another possibility worth considering: you may discover that you prefer building a career.

One of the myths surrounding entrepreneurship is that owning a business is the highest form of professional success. It isn’t.

Some people enjoy making decisions under uncertainty and carrying responsibility for an entire company. Others do their best work within an organization, where they can contribute their talents without being responsible for payroll, taxes, and every financial setback.

A meaningful career that supports your family and allows you to use your strengths is an achievement. There is no reason to dismiss it because someone else has “founder” in their title.

Before deciding which path to pursue, ask yourself what you want your working life to provide. Consider your temperament, family responsibilities, financial situation, and willingness to live with uncertainty.

You don’t need to rush into entrepreneurship to prove your ambition.
If you are working today and thinking about starting something tomorrow, make the most of where you are. Learn the business. Build useful skills. Develop a reputation for reliability.

Those years can become the foundation for whatever you choose to build next.
