Nonprofit Beachwood 100 supports city’s first responders
Since 1969, Beachwood 100 has supported the city’s first responders by providing financial assistance, equipment and educational scholarships, bringing residents and local businesses together to give back to those who serve their community.
The citizen-led and funded nonprofit organization provides additional resources to Beachwood police officers, firefighters and other first responders.
“It’s a way that citizens and residents and businesses can give back to those that protect them,” president Ivor Kiwi said.
The organization offers financial assistance through loans or grants to first responders facing unexpected financial challenges, including medical emergencies. It also provides funding to departments for safety and fitness equipment.
One of Beachwood 100’s main initiatives is its annual scholarship program, which supports children of first responders pursuing higher education.
“In the beginning of the year, we have an application process, and any child of a first responder in Beachwood that’s employed by Beachwood who’s going to college the next year can apply for the scholarship,” Kiwi said.
The organization reviews applications before hosting its annual scholarship event, typically held in May.
For the past two years, the event has taken place at Hex restaurant, which donated its space and food. The celebration brings together scholarship recipients and their families, corporate sponsors, city officials, police and fire chiefs and community members.
Beachwood 100 also works to improve the well-being of first responders through projects that address their everyday needs.
One recent initiative involved renovating a wellness room at the Beachwood Police Department, transforming an underused space into a comfortable area where officers can take breaks.
“We funded it and did the work to, along with the city, paint it and get new furniture and then stock it with food so that it can be a kind of a quiet space for the police force when they need to kind of have some time,” he said.
Members contributed money and food to help stock the room, which continues to be frequently used by officers.
The organization is operated by a volunteer board that coordinates fundraising efforts, events and community initiatives.
Residents and businesses can support Beachwood 100 through its membership program. Individual memberships cost $50 annually and include two car decals and two wallet cards recognizing their support.
Members also receive updates through newsletters and social media and have opportunities to participate in events and charitable projects.
Looking ahead, Beachwood 100 plans to continue its community outreach, including participating in local events alongside the city’s police and fire departments.
Its next annual membership campaign is expected to take place in November or December, followed by another scholarship celebration in May 2027.
