Oct 21, 2026·4 min read

A retired NYPD detective from Haverstraw has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Tuesday evening’s fatal shooting of a fellow Rockland County resident on the George Washington Bridge, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

According to the NYPD, Victor Romero, 62, of Haverstraw, was arrested at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday within the confines of the NYPD’s 33rd Precinct and charged with murder in the death of Koran Irvine, 46, of Valley Cottage.

Romero is a former NYPD narcotics detective who served with Narcotics Borough Brooklyn North before retiring from the department in 2001.

Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a road rage encounter shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, when Irvine was driving his Volkswagen Golf onto the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Irvine’s vehicle nearly colliding with another car before that vehicle pulled alongside his Volkswagen and a single gunshot was fired, hitting Irvine in the right shoulder.

Irvine’s vehicle subsequently crashed into the center median. Emergency personnel rushed him to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators reportedly traced a black Range Rover believed to have been involved in the shooting to Romero, who now works as a chauffeur transporting corporate executives. Detectives located the vehicle outside his Haverstraw residence before Romero voluntarily appeared for questioning Wednesday.

Irvine, a married father of two, was a longtime Con Edison employee who had recently celebrated his 20th anniversary with the company. He was reportedly returning home from an overtime shift when he was killed.

The shooting prompted a massive police response and the closure of the bridge’s westbound upper level for several hours, causing major traffic backups throughout the area.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A 46-year-old Rockland County man was shot and killed Tuesday evening while driving across the George Washington Bridge in what investigators believe may have been a road rage incident, sparking a major police investigation and hours of traffic delays.

The victim has been identified as Koran Irvine, a resident of Valley Cottage and longtime Con Edison employee.

According to authorities, the shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on the westbound upper level of the bridge, heading toward New Jersey.

Investigators believe Irvine was driving a blue Volkswagen Golf when he nearly collided with another vehicle on a ramp leading onto the bridge. As both vehicles continued westbound, an occupant of the other vehicle reportedly opened fire, hitting Irvine.

His vehicle continued traveling before crashing into the center median near the middle of the bridge.

Port Authority Police officers responding to an initial report of a single-vehicle crash discovered Irvine suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Irvine was employed by Con Edison and had reportedly recently celebrated 20 years with the utility company. Con Edison issued a statement expressing heartbreak over his death and extending condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.

The shooting prompted authorities to shut down the westbound upper level of the George Washington Bridge for several hours, creating massive traffic backups extending into the Bronx. The roadway reopened early Wednesday morning.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage as they work to identify the vehicle and individual responsible for the shooting. No arrests have been announced.

The Port Authority Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation.
