3rd annual Beachwood Health, Wellness & Safety Expo Oct. 29
Cleveland Senior Network will host its third annual Beachwood Health, Wellness & Safety Expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Beachwood Community Center, bringing together older adults, local businesses and community organizations for a day of health education, safety resources and Halloween activities.
The event, which is open to everyone, will feature health screenings, educational presentations, more than 40 vendors and speakers, raffle prizes, a costume contest and bingo.
Melinda Smith, vice president of marketing for Cleveland Senior Network, said the event is designed to provide older adults with information about available community resources while giving them an opportunity to enjoy a fun day.
“The Cleveland Senior Network sponsors the event, and it’s a Halloween health and safety event for seniors in the community,” Smith told the Cleveland Jewish News. “So, we try to have a fun day for them. We have different vendors who support or supply services to seniors in the community, and they can come around and collect information.”
University Hospitals will provide health screenings, including blood pressure checks, while local experts will offer educational presentations on health, wellness and safety.
Attendees will also have opportunities to connect with organizations that provide services to help older adults remain healthy, active, independent and safe.
“There are some health tables there from University Hospitals, so they can do blood pressure checks, things like that,” Smith said. “And then we have lunch for them, and there’s a Halloween contest, so they can dress up and win a prize, both for the vendors and for the seniors.”
A free lunch will be available to the first 150 attendees. The event will also include raffle drawings, a 50/50 cash raffle and gift card bingo.
Proceeds from the raffles will benefit the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods or other nonperishable food items to receive additional raffle tickets.
“The money that we raise from the raffle goes to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank,” Smith said. “They can bring in canned goods, and those canned goods will get them an extra ticket to win in the raffle.”
The event’s keynote speaker will be Sylvia Pla-Raith, deputy director of community services for the Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services.
Smith said the organization’s mission goes beyond hosting community events, with an emphasis on education and supporting local nonprofits.
“The focus of our Cleveland Senior Network is to give back to the community,” Smith said. “We try to hit both the people who serve the community, the people in the community and the nonprofits that support all of the above.”
