MAILBAG: Dangerous Intersection at West Maple and Viola Road – How Many More Accidents Before Something Is Done?
Anyone who regularly drives through this intersection knows exactly what I’m talking about. Trying to make a turn from West Maple onto Viola Road has become a nightmare. Cars come flying down Viola Road, often without slowing down, leaving drivers on West Maple struggling to find a safe opening in traffic.
You’re forced to inch your vehicle forward, hoping you can see far enough and that an approaching driver isn’t coming too fast. Every turn feels like a gamble, and that’s simply unacceptable for such a busy intersection in the heart of our community.
We’ve already seen accidents at this location, yet nothing seems to change. Are we really going to wait until someone is seriously injured, or worse, before taking action?
The solution doesn’t have to involve some massive construction project or millions of dollars. A simple three-way stop, with proper signage and enforcement, could make a tremendous difference in slowing traffic and giving drivers a fair chance to navigate the intersection safely.
This isn’t just about drivers. It’s about pedestrians, families, and children who use these roads every single day.
I’m calling on the Town of Ramapo and the appropriate traffic officials to take a serious look at this intersection and conduct a safety review before another accident occurs.
Safety should be proactive, not something we address only after tragedy strikes.
