MAILBAG RESPONSE: Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht Announces Plans for Traffic Signal and Turning Lanes at West Maple and Viola Road Intersection

Oct 21, 2026·1 min read

Following a Monsey Scoop Mailbag raising serious safety concerns about the intersection of West Maple Avenue and Viola Road, Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht responded with an update on plans to improve the busy intersection.

According to Specht, the town previously directed its traffic engineering consultant, MJ Engineering, to study the intersection and recommend improvements, with the request given priority.

In September, MJ Engineering submitted a proposal to design significant upgrades to the intersection, including the installation of a traffic signal and dedicated turning lanes.

Specht confirmed that the proposal is scheduled to go before the Ramapo Town Board at its October 28 meeting for approval.

If approved, MJ Engineering will begin the necessary surveying, mapping, and design work to move the project forward.

The proposed improvements would address longstanding traffic and safety concerns at an intersection that residents have described as increasingly difficult and dangerous to navigate.
