DRAFT CONTROVERSY: Attorney General Reports 67,230 Chareidim Facing Draft Enforcement, Urges Additional Sanctions
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has informed Israel’s High Court of Justice that 67,230 Chareidi men are classified as draft evaders or have failed to report to military enlistment offices after receiving conscription orders. Israeli media reports.
In her submission, the attorney general said that approximately 110,000 people nationwide have failed to comply with military reporting requirements, with the Chareidi sector accounting for a substantial portion of the total.
The filing acknowledged that Chareidi enlistment rose during the past year. According to the figures presented, 4,298 Chareidi men joined the military during the enlistment year ending in June 2026, compared with 2,811 during the previous year.
Government legal officials attributed the increase to expanded military service tracks for Chareidim and increased enforcement measures. At the same time, the attorney general argued that current enlistment levels remain far below the IDF’s operational needs.
Baharav-Miara urged the court to consider additional enforcement mechanisms, including steps that could affect government benefits for individuals who fail to comply with conscription requirements.
The submission follows the recent arrest of dozens of Chareidi men at Ben Gurion Airport after their return from the United States, a move that drew criticism from Prime Minister Netanyahu and intensified the political debate over military service.
