IDENTITY QUESTIONS: Federal Filing Lists Ilhan Omar Under Different Name Amid Immigration Investigation

Oct 22, 2026·2 min read

A federal court filing has identified Rep. Ilhan Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” raising new questions about the Minnesota Democrat’s identity amid an investigation involving her immigration records.

Two people familiar with the investigation reportedly said the name Omar uses publicly differs from her birth name. The claims have not been proven in court, and Omar has not been charged with a crime.

The filing’s use of “Nur Said Elmi” has drawn attention because Omar’s former husband is named Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Omar has previously denied accusations that she married a relative to facilitate immigration.

Asked Wednesday whether she was related to her former husband, Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.”

Attorney General Todd Blanche, questioned about the name appearing in the filing, said prosecutors use collected evidence in their motions. “I don’t think AUSAs would make up names,” he said.

Investigators reportedly obtained Omar’s DNA and seized her passport and phone during the October 12 search.

Federal authorities are examining possible fraud in her family’s immigration paperwork and have issued grand jury subpoenas to some relatives. The Justice Department has confirmed that the matter is a criminal investigation but has released few details.

Omar has denied wrongdoing and described the search as political intimidation. She said the attention surrounding the operation had left her feeling unsafe and prompted plans to leave her Washington home.

A former federal immigration judge said a proven discrepancy involving an unlawfully assumed identity could raise questions about government applications and other documents. That assessment was conditional; the reported name difference itself does not establish immigration fraud.
