Therese Helene Boosin, known affectionately to family and friends as “Terry”, passed away peacefully in White Plains, N.Y. on Aug. 21 at the age of 83.
Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., Terry grew up in Shaker Heights, a place she called home for nearly her entire life. For decades, she dedicated her wisdom and intellect to shaping young minds as a middle school Spanish and English teacher in Garfield Heights. Known fondly as Señorita Boosin, she touched the lives of more than 5,000 students – many of whom she remarkably kept in touch with for decades. She is remembered by all who knew her as patient, judicious and kind.
Terry fiercely protected the beauty of a simple, comfortable life. She was famously resistant to embracing modern technology, remaining delightfully clueless to computers, iPads, emails and text messages. Instead, she filled her world with familiar pleasures: she was an avid fan of "Jeopardy!", a master of crosswords and a true connoisseur of sweets, particularly Lindt truffles and Panera cookies.
Behind her quiet exterior was a legendary, desert-dry sense of humor. She loved to goof around and possessed a brilliant deadpan wit. In her final months, when family visited and greeted her with "Hola, Señorita," she would quickly respond with a smirk and a classic, commanding: "Get out the snacks."
In May, Terry made the brave move to New York to be close to her sister, nieces, grand-nieces and grand-nephew. Though her health challenges turned her time in New York into an unexpected journey, she faced her final months with clarity and grace to the very end. Terry will be remembered as the kindest, most generous person her family has ever known.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Morris Benjamin Boosin and Edith Leah Hanson.
Terry’s wise, yet playful spirit lives on through her devoted sister, Barbara Davis; her cherished nieces, Marisa McMahon and Abbe Reese; and her adored grand-nieces and grand-nephew, Elayna, Caden and Shailey. Terry was profoundly loved, and all who knew her are entirely better for it. Te queremos, Tía.
A celebration of life honoring Terry's beautiful legacy will be held Nov. 22 from 1-4 p.m. at The Diplomat at 18975 Van Aken Blvd. in Shaker Heights, where she lived for most of her adult life.
