GAZA ROADBLOCKS: Huckabee Warns Trump’s Plan Faces Serious Staffing And Resource Gaps
U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has reportedly warned Washington that the international framework tasked with implementing President Donald Trump’s Gaza plan faces significant gaps in staffing, resources and operational planning.
In a diplomatic cable, Huckabee raised questions about whether the Peace Council can assume the responsibilities assigned to it without additional support from the American administration.
His central concern involves the International Gaza Support Center, or IGSC, which coordinates efforts between the United States, Israel and international partners.
The Pentagon plans to reduce its personnel at the center over the coming year and transfer some responsibilities to civilian officials. According to Huckabee’s reported cable, however, it remains unclear who will fill the resulting gap.
“The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem is not currently prepared in terms of manpower to take on these roles,” Huckabee wrote.
The ambassador indicated that the embassy could prepare to assume additional responsibilities, but only after officials establish the personnel, funding and logistical support required.
Although the Peace Council is working to expand its staff, Huckabee reportedly cautioned that “it’s still not clear whether it will be able to fulfill all the roles” at the coordination center.
The warning highlights practical challenges facing the international mechanisms central to the administration’s vision for postwar Gaza.
Under the Peace Council’s roadmap, an international stabilization force would help secure humanitarian aid, train Palestinian police and support implementation of the broader plan. The framework also calls for demilitarizing Gaza and transferring authority from Hamas to a new administration.
Months after the plan’s presentation, however, Hamas’s continued presence and the unresolved question of disarmament remain major obstacles.
For Israel, the staffing concerns carry direct security implications, raising questions about whether the international framework can effectively assume responsibility on the ground.
Israel has maintained that withdrawals and the transfer of territory must rest on concrete security arrangements, with the effective demilitarization of Hamas a central requirement.
The reported cable comes as Peace Council officials seek to move from preparations to implementation. Officials have reportedly expressed hope that work completed in recent months will allow the process to accelerate after the American midterm elections and Israel’s elections.
Huckabee’s warning indicates that fundamental questions about staffing, budgets and operational responsibility remain unresolved as those next steps approach.
