Boynton Beach leaders are sounding the alarm over a proposed state constitutional amendment they say could cost the city tens of millions of dollars in revenue each year if voters approve it in November. City officials said the proposal would expand a property tax exemption and could reduce Boynton Beach's ad valorem tax revenue by an estimated $18 million to $22 million, or about 46%, according to a preliminary staff presentation to commissioners. Staff told commissioners the city could face reduced hours at the library and recreation center, fewer community events, higher user fees and possible facility closures. City Manager Daniel Dugger said the city's workforce could also be heavily affected. "Of the 991 employees, there will be mass layoffs in the city of Boynton Beach," Dugger said, adding that a budget gap of that size could not be closed without affecting positions. Officials also said there is no guarantee the state would provide funding to offset the losses. Commissioners said they are not yet discussing specific cuts, but they believe public outreach should begin now so residents understand what could be at stake. "A lot of people are saying, 'Boy, we're going to be saving ad valorem dollars,' but they don't understand what we're giving up," one commissioner said.

Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia had a message for south Florida voters Wednesday. Don’t believe the hype from “big government apologists” who claim cities and counties won’t be able to afford core government services if Gov. Ron DeSantis’ revamped property tax package is approved by 60% of the voters in November. Ingoglia, appointed CFO by DeSantis, has been making the case for months that local governments have engaged in wasteful spending for the last five years, creating the premise that cities and counties can absorb the financial hit that would come their way if the package passes.

New York-based MCR has submitted a significant boost for its plans to build hotels surrounding its Hilton Miami Airport Blue Lagoon. M2 Miami Airport Blue Lagoon LLC, part of MCR, filed a DIZ zoning application with Miami-Dade County officials for the 20.6-acre site at 5101 Blue Lagoon Dr. It currently has a 14-story, 508-room hotel that was developed on the waterfront site in 1983. After buying the property for $118.25 million in 2023, MCR filed plans in 2024 to build another 400 hotel rooms there – with two hotels of 200 rooms each in eight stories. However, the new proposal is for 1,000 additional hotel rooms. Now, MCR wants to rezone the site from IU-2 (industrial) to RU-4A (hotel and apartments), allow up to 164 feet in height instead of 154 feet, and reduce the distance between the hotels and the parking garages. This would set the stage for two additional hotels of 500 rooms and 14 stories each. The two new hotels would have pool decks on the sixth floor. The rooms would range from 324 to 855 square feet. Because the new hotels would replace surface parking, MCR would build new parking garages. There would be two new garages serving the existing Hilton: a seven-story garage with 419 spaces for self-parking and a five-story garage with 266 spaces for only valet parking. Plus, each new hotel would have a six-story garage with 297 spaces.
