Miami-Dade County is seeking federal approval to replace dozens of troubled Proterra electric buses years before the end of their expected service life after spending nearly $62 million on the fleet. A newly released report shows the county has asked the Federal Transit Administration for a waiver that would allow it to replace the buses without repaying federal funds tied to the purchase. The county purchased 69 Proterra buses and related charging infrastructure as part of its transition to cleaner public transportation. However, repeated breakdowns, reliability issues and difficulties obtaining replacement parts have left much of the fleet out of service.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office says a wanted man tried to outsmart deputies in a game of hide-and-seek, but his hiding spot turned out to be more cramped than clever. The sheriff's office said its deputies with the agency’s Fugitive Unit went to a home on June 5 to serve a felony warrant on James Myers, 33. Authorities say Myers had skipped a court appearance tied to several charges, including grand theft, fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, excessive speeding, and resisting an officer. Those charges stem from a March incident involving a stolen truck and a run-in with a K-9 unit that ultimately led to his arrest at the time. This time around, deputies say Myers tried a different strategy when they showed up, disappearing somewhere inside the home. A search did not take long to turn up something unusual. Myers had wedged himself inside the air conditioning system’s air handler, tucked behind ductwork in an apparent attempt to avoid being found. Deputies pulled him out and took him into custody without further incident.

Spirit Airlines' former headquarters campus in Dania Beach, Florida, is scheduled for a bankruptcy court-supervised auction on July 22, 2026. Broward County commissioners have been actively exploring purchasing part or all of the campus as a potential new county government hub to replace their aging downtown Fort Lauderdale facility (previously estimated at much higher costs for new construction, around $663 million). The county is primarily interested in the office building, parking garage, training building, and adjacent land — not the full campus (including the residential portion). They have indicated a cap of around $100 million for the real estate purchase. Estimated total costs for conversion/adaptation: $414–$451 million, which could be significantly cheaper and faster than building from scratch. Commissioners deferred deeper discussion but plan further review. Private buyers are also expected to compete. The Florida Supreme Court has allowed new U.S. House districts drawn by Republicans to be used in the midterm elections, marking another victory for the GOP in a nationwide redistricting effort aimed at helping the party retain its slim House majority. The court on Wednesday refused a request to issue a temporary injunction against the new districts. Attorneys for voters who sued argued that the new House districts violate a state constitutional provision prohibiting partisan gerrymandering, and that the court should order the state to continue using the same districts as in the previous election.

Palm Beach County officials are bracing for what could be the largest budget cuts in the county's history, as proposed property tax reductions threaten to eliminate nearly $400 million from county operations over the next two years. County Administrator Joe Abruzzo announced during a budget meeting that if the property tax reduction passes, the county's budget for 30 departments could drop from $609 million to approximately $210 million — a loss of more than 65% of current funding, according to the county's property appraiser. The Palm Beach County Fire Department alone stands to lose just under $200 million in funding under the proposed tax structure, Abruzzo said. The cuts would affect virtually every county service, including parks, libraries, roads and other essential operations. Given the potential for an unbalanced budget staff proposed cuts to BCC department budgets and eliminating positions that are currently vacant. Doing so could save the county $35.5 dollars.

Coconut Creek Plaza, a retail center that is anchored by two charter schools, sold for $21.5 million. Alliance XI LLC, managed by Robert Cambo and Maurice Cayon in Miami, sold the 122,474-square-foot retail center at 5233-5289 Coconut Creek Parkway in Margate to Coconut Creek Shopping Center LLC, managed by Carlos Perez and Marlen Morales of CEMC Holdings in Miami. CBRE’s Benjamin Silver and Kelley Greestein brokered the deal, while CBRE’s Ed Petti helped the buyer with financing. According to CBRE, Coconut Creek Plaza is 86% leased and anchored by two charter schools. Those schools are Ascend Academy Charter High School and West Broward Academy. Part of the parking lot was converted to soccer fields and basketball courts. "This transaction reflects the strong investor appetite for retail properties and a comfort for the long-term viability of charter schools as a specialized tenant base in South Florida," Silver said. "Coconut Creek Plaza's stable tenancy, location, and the area's continued growth made it a highly sought-after investment. We secured a buyer within a week of bringing the property to market. Since there are few large parcels of vacant land in Broward County, charter schools often need to get creative when finding new locations. That has led to shopping centers being repurposed for charter schools.

A family of four with two kids in Florida has to budget over $1,500 a month, on average, to afford food. That bill is even higher for families across the Tampa Bay region, according to the latest ALICE report released this week. The annual study calculates how much it takes for working people to afford basic needs. In most cases, food is the largest expense for households behind only rent. A recent survey of Floridians found that 39% of families used 'Buy Now, Pay Later' apps, like Klarna or Afterpay, to split the cost of food into installments. The nonprofit No Kid Hungry surveyed over 1,000 Florida adults who answered a multiple-choice poll via text.
