🛒 Zellers is coming back to Toronto. The iconic Canadian discount retailer announced today that it will open a new 25,000-square-foot standalone store at 80 Orfus Rd., near Yorkdale, on June 18. For many Canadians, Zellers was a retail institution before its stores were sold off during the ill-fated Target Canada expansion. After years of smaller-scale revival attempts, this marks the chain's first major Ontario expansion, with additional locations expected to be announced later this year. 📜 כ' סיון – A Forgotten Fast Day in Jewish History The following historical notes were brought to our attention by Emailim BaTorah. Today, כ' סיון, carries a remarkable and often overlooked place in Jewish history. 🔹 In 1171, thirty-one Jews were burned alive על קידוש השם in the city of Blois, France. In response, רבינו תם established כ' סיון as a communal fast day, declaring: "This fast is greater than צום גדליה, for it is like יום כיפור." 🔹 Following the devastating massacres of ת"ח–ת"ט (1648–49), the Va’ad Arba Aratzos reinstated כ' סיון as a day of fasting and mourning. The מגן אברהם (O.C. 580:9) writes that it became customary throughout Poland to fast on this day. 🔹 The משנה ברורה (580:16), citing the שערי תשובה and מגן אברהם, notes that this communal fast was observed by males from age 18 and females from age 15. 🔹 After the Holocaust, the Gedolim of Hungary designated כ' סיון as a day of fasting and remembrance for the six million קדושים murdered by the Nazis ימ"ש. Special סליחות were composed and printed in Budapest for the occasion. (The fast was observed by those under the age of 55.) However, efforts to establish a universal Holocaust fast day did not gain broad acceptance. In Eretz Yisroel, Rav Chizkiyahu Mishkovsky זצ"ל and other Gedolim sought to establish a period of communal mourning and a fast day during the war years. The חזון איש and the בריסקער רב opposed creating a new public fast day, arguing that our generation lacks the authority to institute new communal תעניות for כלל ישראל. Rav Moshe Feinstein זצ"ל (אגרות משה יו"ד ד:נז) explains that Hitler's decree was directed against the entire Jewish people and therefore falls under the broader tragedy of גלות and חורבן הבית, for which חז"ל already established national days of fasting and mourning. We are not empowered to add new enactments to those instituted by חז"ל. An interesting footnote: In many Eastern European communities, special memorial prayers continued to be recited on כ' סיון well into the 20th century, even after the actual fasting practice had largely faded. The date thus remained etched in the communal memory of generations of Jews. A little-known date on the calendar, כ' סיון has served for centuries as a day of remembrance for some of the greatest tragedies to befall the Jewish people.

🚔 Enhanced Security Planned for Sunday's Walk with Israel Toronto Police say they will deploy a strong police presence and extensive security measures for Sunday's Walk with Israel, which is expected to draw thousands of participants. Road closures will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. along Wilson Ave. and Bathurst St., and police say their goal is to ensure participants can attend safely while preventing the kind of hostile "gauntlet" situations that have occurred at some pro-Israel events elsewhere.
