Coast Guard Icebreakers Active on the Hudson as Deep Freeze Continues
By Y.M. Lowy
With freezing temperatures locking in across the area, U.S. Coast Guard tugboats are actively breaking up ice on the Hudson River and New York Harbor.
Ice buildup has expanded quickly over the past several days, stretching from the harbor north into the Hudson Valley. With extreme cold expected to continue, including wind chills near zero, icy conditions are likely to remain.
The Coast Guard has deployed three tugboats — two 140-foot Bay-class icebreakers and a 65-foot harbor tug — all based in Bayonne. Crews are working around the clock to clear ice and keep waterways open for navigation, fuel deliveries, and essential marine traffic.
While all ports in the region remain open, NYC Ferry service is still suspended due to the ice, affecting routes used by many commuters. Ferry officials say they are monitoring conditions and preparing to resume service once it is safe.
The Staten Island Ferry continues to operate on a normal schedule, with officials noting that its large vessels can safely handle thin ice.
As the cold drags on, Coast Guard icebreaking operations are expected to continue in the days ahead to keep the Hudson and surrounding waterways moving.
