Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles Responds to Your ‘Ask The Mayor’ Questions: Astor and Coleman Traffic Safety
The following is an ‘Ask The Mayor’ question submitted to TLS, and the Mayor’s response. Email your questions for the Mayor to [email protected].
Question:
Dear Mayor,
Thank you for this opportunity to present our issues to you. It is always incredible to watch representative democracy at its best in this space! We are truly privileged to have a Mayor like you in office!
As residents of Astor and Coleman, off Kennedy Blvd. and Squankum Road – we have a few Traffic Safety issue we are hoping you can help us overcome.
Because the bus to Brooklyn leaves from this vicinity, many commuters leave their cars on these two blocks before boarding the bus. While that in itself is not a problem- the issue is that very often they are rushing to catch the bus – speeding down our residential streets, and subsequently, parking very haphazardly- in a way that disrupts the flow of traffic.
There are a few suggestions we came up with that we feel would help alleviate these problems.
1. Convert the current “YIELD” sign at the corner of Coleman Ave. to a full stop. This will automatically slow down the speed of drivers racing down the block and provide greater safety as they round the bend.
2. Paint the corners of Coleman and Astor yellow to eliminate parking in blind spots which obscures drivers’ vision as they make those turns.
3. Increase traffic patrol when possible and ticket drivers who park on those yellow lines and / or park so far from the curb that they prevent incoming vehicles from being able to pass. This is an especially prevalent problem on the strip of Astor leading eastbound when you make the right turn from Squankum – because once a vehicle cannot pass, it has no recourse. You cannot reverse back onto Squankum and there is no shoulder.
If anyone from the Township or Police Department would like to meet with us- so we can show them first hand, we would be happy to do that.
As these are all Township roadways ( as opposed to County or State) we are hoping it will not be tremendously complicated to resolve.
Again, we thank you and the Lakewood Scoop for this opportunity and look forward to hearing from you.
On behalf of the residents of Astor and Coleman
Response from Mayor Coles:
Good morning
Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I am sending it to traffic and safety as well as engineering to get their input and see what we can accomplish.
Stay warm
Ray
