After the Freeze: Melting Snow Creates New Dangers Across NYC

By Y.M. Lowy

After several days of extreme cold, rising temperatures are now creating a new set of risks across New York City. While the warmer weather helps melt built-up snow and ice, it also brings hidden dangers that residents should keep in mind.

Chunks of melting snow and ice can slide or fall from rooftops, scaffolding, and building edges without warning. Sidewalks near buildings and construction sites can be especially risky. Pedestrians should stay alert and avoid walking too close to overhangs where possible.

As the snow melts, salty water is also seeping into streets and underground systems. This can sometimes interfere with electrical equipment below ground and lead to smoking or sparking manholes. If anyone sees smoke, sparks, or an open manhole cover, they should move away and call 911 right away.

Road and sidewalk conditions are also changing by the hour. Wet surfaces during the day can quickly refreeze at night, especially on bridges, corners, and shaded blocks. That means black ice, slippery crossings, and new potholes may appear even where things looked clear earlier. Drivers must drive carefully and allow extra travel time.

Residents are also urged to check home vents and exhaust flues to make sure they are clear of snow and debris, and to confirm that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.
