DSNY Issued More Than 2,700 Tickets for Failure to Shovel Sidewalks Following the Snowstorm

Following the January 25 snowstorm, the New York City Department of Sanitation issued a large number of tickets to property owners who failed to properly clear snow and ice from their sidewalks.

According to DSNY, 2,738 tickets were issued to homeowners and business owners who did not comply with the city’s snow removal requirements.

City rules require all property owners to clear snow and ice from the entire sidewalk in front of their property, as well as the curbside area next to the street extending about 18 inches from the curb. Failure to comply can result in fines.

Violations carry a $150 fine for a first offense, with repeat offenses resulting in fines of up to $350. Sidewalk inspections are conducted during designated enforcement hours, which vary depending on whether a property is residential or commercial.

City officials noted that snow removal rules apply after all snow events, regardless of the amount of snowfall.
