President Donald Trump is opposed to Israel annexing the Wesr Bank a White House official confirmed to Axios late Monday, signaling a potential point of friction as the Israeli cabinet moves to expand its authority in the territory.
The administration views the stability of the region as a critical component of Israeli security and broader regional peace efforts, the official says.
“A stable West Bank keeps Israel secure and is in line with this administration’s goal to achieve peace in the region,” the White House official said.
The statement comes in response to a recent decision by the Israeli cabinet to expand control over the West Bank, including moves that would extend authority into Areas A and B. Under the Oslo Accords, these areas are designated to be under the full or partial control of the Palestinian Authority.
The White House’s stance underscores a desire to maintain the status quo in the West Bank to prevent further destabilization, even as the Israeli government pushes for greater jurisdiction over the disputed territories.
