Trump Rebukes Investigators Over Guthrie Case, Calls for Shift in National Focus

Feb 20, 2026·2 min read

President Trump criticized the handling of the probe into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance on Thursday, urging reporters to broaden their attention to “other subjects” after weeks of intense public scrutiny surrounding the suspected abduction.

Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, vanished on Feb. 1 after a masked intruder was caught on camera at the entrance of her home outside Tucson.

Trump said he was baffled that officials disclosed to the press that a Pima County Sheriff’s Department helicopter had been outfitted with an FBI Bluetooth “sniffer” intended to pick up signals from Guthrie’s pacemaker.

“I didn’t like when they talked about going after the pacemaker before they even started going after it,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he traveled to Georgia.

He continued, “If in fact they could do it that way, the person would say, ‘Well, I’m not going to let that happen’… I can’t imagine why they would have done that, just in terms of strategy.”

Trump added that it was time for the media to “start reporting on other subjects also and see what happens,” calling the saga “a very sad situation.”

Meanwhile, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been under mounting fire as leads diminish, particularly for sending a glove discovered near Guthrie’s residence to a private laboratory in Florida instead of a potentially faster FBI facility. Testing revealed DNA from an unidentified individual.

“It is a common belief in this agency that this case has become an ego case for Sheriff Nanos,” said Sgt. Aaron Cross, who heads the Pima County Deputies Organization, the union representing sheriff’s office staff.

Although the FBI is assisting, the agency has not taken over the investigation; something that would require determining that a federal crime may have occurred.

It remains unknown whether local authorities or federal agents leaked details about the Bluetooth “sniffer,” first reported by Fox News. An FBI representative later told NewsNation that “sophisticated FBI technology” was being utilized in the search.

Trump told The Post on Monday that if Guthrie is not found alive, he believes those responsible should receive the death penalty.
