Taking Action: Chaverim Volunteers Fix Troubling 17th Avenue Potholes

By Y.M. Lowy

Last night, after weeks of massive potholes plaguing 17th Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets, causing reported tire damage and close calls as vehicles swerved to avoid the deep gaps in the asphalt, volunteers from Chaverim were seen filling multiple large craters along the roadway.

The potholes, which residents say have grown worse after each storm, had become a serious hazard for drivers traveling through the area. Community members reportedly contacted multiple times the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), but as of last night, no repairs had been made.

In a proactive effort to prevent further vehicle damage and reduce the risk of accidents, the volunteers filled the holes to make the road safer for passing motorists.

Boro Park locals expressed appreciation for the effort, noting that while permanent pothole repair is the responsibility of city maintenance crews, the volunteer work helped address an immediate and ongoing safety concern.
