Law Enforcement Increases Patrols Across Lakewood and NJ Amid Middle East Tensions
With tensions escalating overseas between Israel and Iran, local and county law enforcement agencies are taking precautionary steps to ensure the continued safety of residents here in Lakewood and throughout Ocean County.
The Lakewood Police Department issued a statement to residents acknowledging the ongoing developments abroad and recognizing that international conflicts can raise concern locally — particularly in a diverse community such as Lakewood.
Police officials said they have been closely monitoring the situation and, out of an abundance of caution, have increased patrols throughout the township. Additional attention is being given to houses of worship, schools, and other community gathering locations.
Authorities stressed that at this time, there are no known imminent or specific threats to Lakewood. However, they emphasized that the department remains vigilant and proactive.
Lakewood Police Chief Gregory Meyer stated, “The safety of our residents remains our top priority. We are actively monitoring global events, coordinating with our law enforcement partners at every level, and taking proactive steps to ensure our community remains secure. We encourage everyone to stay alert and to contact us if they see anything concerning.”
At the county level, Bradley D. Billhimer confirmed that he participated in an emergent conference with state, local, and federal law enforcement partners to address the recent United States military action in Iran.
New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport said Governor Mikie Sherrill would has been in communication with her office, Acting Superintendent Hengemuhle, and Director Thomas Hauck of the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness as they coordinate with federal authorities, county prosecutors, and law enforcement leaders statewide.
While there are no specific threats to New Jersey, Davenport said patrols will be increased at sensitive locations — particularly houses of worship — and additional precautionary steps are being taken, both visible and behind the scenes. She urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to local police.
Governor Sherrill echoed those sentiments, stating that the safety and security of New Jersey residents is her top responsibility. She said her administration is closely monitoring developments overseas and confirmed that, as a precaution, patrols will be increased at houses of worship and other sensitive sites.
Officials are reminding residents that public safety is a shared responsibility and are urging anyone who observes suspicious or unusual activity to report it immediately.
