Former Iranian Leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Reportedly Killed in Airstrike

Mar 1, 2026·1 min read

Iranian media outlets reported Sunday afternoon that former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed along with his bodyguard in an Israeli airstrike carried out while he was under house arrest.

Ahmadinejad, who governed as Iran’s sixth president from 2005 to 2013, was widely viewed as one of the regime’s most hardline and openly antisemitic figures. He repeatedly voiced his desire to see Israel destroyed, and he was also an explicit Holocaust denier who hosted an international conference for like-minded Jew haters.

His disputed 2009 reelection ignited the largest demonstrations Iran had seen since the revolution. The government he led responded with a violent crackdown that left dozens dead and hundreds imprisoned.
