Iranian Drones Strike Airport in Azerbaijan, Expanding Regional Conflict

Mar 5, 2026·1 min read

Explosions were reported at Nakhchivan International Airport after missiles and drones believed to have come from Iran struck the area, marking yet another expansion of the ongoing regional conflict.

According to sources cited in international reports, several projectiles originating from the direction of Iran landed on or near the airport grounds in the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan, a territory separated from mainland Azerbaijan and located just a few kilometers from the Iranian border.

Footage circulating online appeared to show an explosion near a parking area close to the airport complex, though the full extent of damage was still being assessed. Officials in Azerbaijan condemned the strike and accused Iran of targeting civilian infrastructure. Initial reports said at least two civilians were injured in the attack.

The Nakhchivan region holds strategic significance due to its proximity to both Iran and Turkey, and any escalation there risks further internationalizing the conflict. Aviation officials have also warned that strikes near airports pose serious risks to travelers and airplanes.

This is a developing story.
