FINAL STRIKE: Israeli Jets Flatten Khamenei’s Bunker in Massive Bombing Raid
Following an extensive intelligence-gathering operation, the Israeli Air Force dropped about 100 bombs from 50 fighter jets on the bunker of Iran’s former supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on Friday. The attack targeted the sprawling “leadership complex” that spanned several streets and housed buildings used by government officials, according to the IDF.
The opening strikes of the campaign against the authoritarian regime in Iran targeted Khamenei’s compound, killing him along with dozens of other high-ranking officials. Subsequent strikes also targeted the compound, killing officials in various outlying buildings. Friday’s strike destroyed Khamenei’s actual bunker, representing for many a symbolic victory over the Islamic Republic.
The military explained in a statement that the “leadership complex” included “many entry points and rooms for gatherings of senior members of the Iranian terror regime.”
“The underground bunker was built beneath the compound and was a secure emergency asset for managing the war by the leader, who was eliminated before he managed to use it,” the military added, but “the compound continued to be used by senior members of the Iranian regime.”
The IDF said that the Military Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 8200 and Unit 9900 had been working on gathering intelligence on the leadership compound for years, enabling the precision of Friday’s strikes.
All together, the strikes on the compound since the start of the campaign on Saturday took out Khamenei, eight top-ranking officials, the presidential bureau and the headquarters of the Supreme National Security Council.
