‘FRIENDLY TAKEOVER?’: Trump Says Cuba Deal Is Imminent as Tensions Rise

Mar 9, 2026·2 min read

President Donald Trump said Monday that a deal with Cuba is imminent. Either Cuba would make a deal, he said, or “we’re going to do it just as easy.”

“They trust Marco Rubio and so do the American people,” Trump added. “He speaks the language, which is always nice and helpful. It might be a friendly takeover. It may not be. But they’re down to, as they say, fumes.”

Tensions with Cuba increased on Feb. 25 when Cuban forces killed four people aboard a Florida-registered speedboat and injured the remaining six crew members, one of whom succumbed to his wounds in early March. Cuban authorities claimed the crew members shot first and that the boat had entered Cuban waters with the intent to infiltrate Cuba and smuggle in weapons. They further claimed to have found assault rifles, handguns and IEDs on the boat.

The United States said it would investigate.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has tightened oil sanctions on Cuba, leading to an economic crisis that has triggered a mass exodus of Cubans fleeing worsening conditions, including hunger.

Trump said Monday that he aims to wrap up operations in Iran before turning his attention back to Cuba, which he said is in its “final moments” amid a massive pressure campaign by the U.S., whose fuel sanctions, for example, plunged the western part of the country into a blackout. Key services such as trash collection and transportation are operating on a limited basis.

“They have no energy,” Trump said. “They have no money. They are in deep trouble on a humanitarian basis.”
