Letter: The Silent Struggle of Lakewood’s Middle Class Before Pesach

Mar 11, 2026·2 min read

To the TLS Editor,

As Pesach gets closer, many families in Lakewood are quietly feeling the pressure. While there are many wonderful tzedakah organizations that help those in serious financial distress, there is a large group that often gets overlooked: the middle-class families.

These are people who work hard, pay their bills, and try to manage responsibly, but the enormous expenses of Yom Tov, especially Pesach, can be overwhelming. Many are struggling more than people realize.

The problem is that for many in this situation, asking for help is extremely difficult. The current systems often involve filling out forms, providing documentation, and going through a process that can feel very uncomfortable and even degrading. For people who have spent their lives supporting themselves, having to prove their hardship can be very hard emotionally.

Because of that, many people simply don’t reach out, even when they really need the help.

Maybe the community could consider a different kind of system. Perhaps there could be an organization where a person could discreetly contact a Rav who knows them, or who could verify their situation. The Rav could confirm that help is needed, allowing assistance to be given without forcing families to go through a long and uncomfortable process.

Lakewood is known for its incredible chesed. With Pesach approaching, it may be worth thinking about how we can make help more accessible and more dignified for families who are doing their best but still finding it hard to keep up with the costs.

No one should feel embarrassed to need a little help preparing for Yom Tov.

Sincerely,
A Concerned Resident
