Legendary KISS Frontman Gene Simmons Slams Celebrity Activism and Pro-Hamas Mark Ruffalo

Mar 12, 2026·3 min read

Legendary KISS frontman Gene Simmons delivered a blunt message to celebrities who regularly lecture the public about politics, sharply criticizing Hollywood figures who speak out on issues such as the Israel Hamas conflict.

In remarks that quickly drew attention online, Simmons said many Americans are tired of being lectured by wealthy entertainers.

“People work hard for a living, and they don’t want to be lectured by people who live in mansions and drive Rolls Royce cars,” Simmons said. “It’s time to shut the fk up. Do your art and shut up. No one is interested in your opinions. Who the fk do you think you are?”

The outspoken rocker said that celebrities often assume their fame gives their opinions extra weight, something he believes many ordinary Americans reject.

Simmons also took aim at actor Mark Ruffalo, who has frequently spoken out on political issues including the war in Gaza. Simmons jokingly referred to the actor as “Mark Buffalo,” dismissing his political commentary.

“I don’t care what he thinks,” Simmons said, adding sarcastically that people might as well ask Kylie Jenner for her views on international conflicts.

Simmons has long argued that entertainers should focus on their craft rather than using their platform to promote political opinions.

Holocaust survivor Flora Klein and Chaim Witz

Born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel, Simmons is the son of Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivors. His mother survived Nazi concentration camps during World War II before immigrating to what was then Mandatory Palestine. After his parents divorced, Simmons and his mother moved to New York when he was eight years old, settling in Queens.

During his childhood in New York, Simmons briefly attended the Orthodox Jewish yeshiva Torah Vodaas before later transferring to public school. He has spoken in interviews about growing up in a traditional Jewish household and the strong influence his mother had on his work ethic after surviving the Holocaust.

Simmons later adopted the name Gene Klein and went on to become the iconic frontman of the band KISS, known worldwide for its theatrical performances, face paint, and larger than life stage presence.

Simmons is also known for his unusually long tongue and for his reality television show Gene Simmons Family Jewels, which aired from 2006 to 2012. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of KISS.
