A new pilot program set to launch next week will bring drone-delivered meals to parts of New Jersey for the first time.
Grubhub announced it will begin testing drone delivery in partnership with Dexa at the Wonder location in Green Brook. Starting March 18, customers within a 2.5-mile radius will be able to order food through the Grubhub app and select drone delivery at no extra cost beyond standard delivery and service fees.
The three-month test will mark the first time commercial food deliveries by drone are being offered in New Jersey.
Meals will be prepared through Wonder’s multi-restaurant concept, where customers can choose from about 15 different food brands operating out of a single kitchen. Orders will then be delivered using Dexa’s DE-2020 automated drone, which lowers packages to the ground using a tether system.

According to the companies, the drones operate under Federal Aviation Administration safety regulations and follow approved flight paths designed to minimize noise and disruption. Customers will be able to track deliveries in real time through the Grubhub app.
Ahead of the launch, Grubhub and Dexa will host a public demonstration event on March 16 in Green Brook with drone demonstrations scheduled for 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. (rain date March 17).
Following the pilot program, Grubhub says it will evaluate the results and consider expanding drone delivery to additional restaurants.
