Police Respond to ‘Active Shooter’ Situation at Major Michigan Synagogue

Mar 12, 2026·2 min read

According to a report from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Thursday afternoon, police responded to an “active shooter situation” at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Mich., the largest Reform synagogue in the United States.

There have been no reports of injuries so far, but the public has been asked to avoid the area. Nearby schools, including West Bloomfield High School, West Bloomfield Middle School, Doherty Elementary School and schools in the Bloomfield Hills district, have activated lockdowns. Police from West Bloomfield, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and the Michigan State Police have converged on the scene and secured the area. Police said that the schools are “in secure mode due to an ongoing incident in West Bloomfield. This is out of precaution; there are no known threats to Bloomfield Hills schools at this time.” They said they are also responding to a fire in the same location.

Michigan State Police posted on X:

“Active Shooting: 03/12 at 12:30 p.m. Location: 5725 Walnut Lake Road (Temple Israel). Synopsis: The Michigan State Police is aware of an active shooting incident that is ongoing in West Bloomfield. We are asking for community members to stay away from the area to allow for police response. Troopers are also increasing patrols at other places of worship in the district.”

The Jewish Federation of Detroit has issued a directive to all Jewish organizations in the area to activate “lockdown protocols.”

“Out of an abundance of caution,” the Ann Arbor Police Department has also put safeguards in place. Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson ordered increased patrols, especially at local schools and houses of worship, as an added precaution.

The respective police departments and local authorities have not released any more details.

This is a developing story.
