
Ramming and Shooting at Temple Israel Synagogue Near Dearborn, Michigan; Suspect Shot Dead
A violent incident unfolded Thursday at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan, after a suspect reportedly rammed a truck into the Jewish synagogue complex before opening fire.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, synagogue security responded immediately and engaged the attacker. The suspect was shot and killed at the scene. Authorities said there were no immediate reports of injuries among congregants or staff.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from the synagogue building following the crash, prompting a large emergency response. Police, fire crews, and other law enforcement agencies quickly surrounded the area as they worked to secure the scene.
Temple Israel, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield, describes itself as the largest Reform synagogue in the United States. The sprawling campus includes religious facilities as well as an early childhood education center and other programs serving children through high school. Fortunately, the early childhood school was not in session on the day of the attack.
As the situation unfolded, nearby residents were advised to shelter in place while authorities investigated and cleared the property. Arrangements were also made to reunite families through the nearby Jewish Community Center.
Out of an abundance of caution, Jewish institutions across the Detroit area were instructed to enter lockout procedures while police continued their investigation.
Temple Israel sits not far from Dearborn, Michigan, home to one of the largest Arab American populations in the United States.
The synagogue is led by Senior Rabbi Harold Loss, with several co rabbis serving alongside him.
