LEAKED CABLE: Rubio Urges Diplomats to Align With Israel on Iran Push
A leaked cable from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly urged American diplomats to coordinate their messaging on Iran with Israeli officials to encourage other countries to collaborate with the United States on the war effort.
The report comes at a time when President Donald Trump is pressuring U.S. allies and other countries to help open the Strait of Hormuz.
“At post’s discretion, advocacy efforts should be coordinated with Israeli diplomatic counterparts,” the leaked diplomatic cable reportedly stated.
In the cable, Rubio pointed to an “elevated risk of attack” from Iran and explained to American diplomats stationed in foreign countries that they should encourage their host governments to “move expeditiously to diminish the capabilities of Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist groups from attacking our respective nations and citizens.”
“We assess that the Iranian regime is more sensitive to collective action than unilateral action, and that joint pressure is more likely to compel behavior change by the regime than unilateral actions alone,” the message is alleged to have stated. “We must act while international attention is focused now to end the Iranian campaign of terror in the Middle East and globally. Do not allow this critical movement to pass.”
Rubio also reportedly encouraged diplomats in foreign countries to tell the governments of those countries to designate Hezbollah and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as terrorist organizations if they have not done so, and to do it “swiftly, as “such a designation will intensify the pressure on the Iranian regime and limit its ability to sponsor terror activities across the globe that jeopardizes the safety and security of your populations.”
His message allegedly noted that the IRGC plans and carries out attacks all over the world and conducts spy missions and influence operations that are “intentional acts designed to intimidate populations and inflict harm on your civilians.”
