DHS Shutdown to End After Senate Deal Restores Funding, But with a Big Compromise from the Republicans

Mar 27, 2026·2 min read

After more than six weeks of disruption, the Department of Homeland Security shutdown is finally possibly coming to an end after a late-night breakthrough in the U.S. Senate. Senators passed a funding bill to restore operations across almost all of DHS, taking a step toward reopening important agencies that had been partially shut down since the middle of February.

The shutdown caused widespread chaos all over the country, especially at airports. Hundreds of TSA workers quit or called out after missing paychecks, leading to massive delays and security lines stretching for hours.

The new deal funds the majority of DHS, including TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard, through the rest of the fiscal year, allowing employees to finally return to work and receive long-awaited paychecks.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said that Republicans had made what was likely their “final” offer to Democrats to reopen DHS.

However, notably, in a big compromise from the GOP, the agreement does not include new funding for ICE or Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which, in fact, is the central issue that triggered the shutdown in the first place.

Despite the breakthrough, tensions are still high. The Senate is expected to revisit ICE and border funding in the near future, meaning the political battle is far from over.

The bill now heads to the House, where it is expected to pass easily, officially bringing an end to one of the most disruptive DHS shutdowns in recent years. This will bring long-awaited relief to millions of americans traveling daily, and could not come at a better time for Jews looking to travel for Pesach.
