U.S., Israel Hit Iran Water Reactor? Report Claims Joint Strike Following Evacuation Warning
Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, which has ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that Israel and the United States struck the heavy water research reactor in Khandab in a joint operation in two separate strikes on Friday, but said no casualties were reported.
Heavy water reactors can cheaply and efficiently produce plutonium, an essential ingredient in manufacturing nuclear weapons.
Although the IDF has not yet confirmed the report, it did issue urgent evacuation warnings to residents in the northwestern Iranian city of Arak. The Khandab reactor is located in the vicinity of Arak.

“Urgent Warning to All Individuals Stationed in the Northwest of Arak City and Individuals Stationed in the Khairabad Industrial Area in the Arak Region Based on the Red-Designated Area on the Attached Map,” the IDF Farsi account on X posted.
“The Israeli Army, continuing its actions in recent days across Iran to strike the military infrastructure of the Iranian regime, will conduct operations in these areas in the coming hours,” the military said.
“Dear Citizens, for the sake of your safety and well-being, we kindly request that you immediately evacuate the aforementioned designated areas indicated on the map,” the IDF continued. “Your presence in these areas endangers your life.”
The IDF announced separately that it had struck a chemical weapons research facility, but it remains unclear if the chemical weapons manufacturing was in the research phase or manufacturing phase.
